The d hotel in Drogheda has been bought from Edward Holdings for an undisclosed sum by Gleann Hospitality Limited. The transaction was finalised on the 13th of January 2017 and plans are already underway to renovate and revamp key areas in the property, including the bar and restaurant, before the summer of this year.
The profitable d hotel, which sits on the historic banks of the River Boyne, employs over 70 staff and is committed to business carrying on as usual with all previous bookings and contracts honoured.
The transfer and future business of the property will be overseen by Alan Murtagh previously of Louis FitzGerald Group while the day to day running of the business will be managed the long-standing GM, Ciaran O’Donovan whose previous experience includes the management of Bewleys Hotel Dublin and the Red Cow Moran Hotel. Further demonstrating the strong appetite among investors for the booming hotel tourist trade, the terms of the sale were agreed rapidly and smoothly with no agent involvement.
Built in 2007, the luxurious waterfront hotel offers 104 superb bedrooms designed for guest comfort and relaxation, many with breathtaking views over the river and town.
The business has seen a strong uptake in the corporate and wedding market in the past year counting businesses such as Coca Cola, RCSI and Harvest Brewing as valued customers. The penthouse suites are ideal for newlyweds and, as a result, the hotel has seen a steady growth in wedding bookings in recent times particularly with the increasing popularity of civil and humanist ceremonies which are approved to take place on site.
Commenting on future plans for the d hotel, owner Alan Murtagh said, “The d hotel is already trading at a high level and generating strong international and domestic business. That said, we want to offer our guests a higher standard in food and beverage. As a result, we plan to undertake a complete rebrand and renovation of the current restaurant and bar, making full use of the beautiful riverside terrace by the time the warm weather hits.”
Echoing this positive sentiment, general manager Ciaran O’Donovan commented, “I think I speak for the entire staff when I say how pleased we are with the new direction that the hotel is taking. This is the best possible outcome for the d hotel locally and we look forward to showcasing the new developments as they happen always with minimum disruption to our guests.”
The d hotel will host a public wedding fair on the evening of Thursday February 23rd. For updates of other upcoming events please visit www.thedhotel.com or follow @thedhotel on social media.
